Sisi orders probe as Giza train collision kills seven, injures 112
- Seven people died and more than 112 were injured in a train collision in Giza.
- President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered a rapid investigation into the crash.
- The train conductor was confirmed among the fatalities by the Chief Prosecutor.
- Authorities are investigating potential signal-system faults or driver error as causes.
The site of the incident is located roughly 32 miles south of Cairo.
The Egyptian Health Ministry initially reported four deaths and 88 injuries before revising the figures to seven fatalities and 112 injured. The Ministry of Health had previously reported an initial toll of 64 injuries. Private sources suggested the number of injured individuals exceeded 140.
Trains 134 and 2010 collide on Cairo-Aswan line
The collision involved train No. 2010, which was travelling from Cairo to Aswan. Train No. 134 struck the rear of train No. 2010 between Kafr Ammar and Al-Rifqa stations.
This impact caused several carriages to leave the tracks. One of the trains derailed, although reports did not specify which one.
Emergency response and hospital treatment
The Egyptian Railway Authority confirmed that a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum collided with the rear of a service heading south from Cairo to Aswan. Following the impact, the rear of the train that was hit derailed onto a countryside road.
The Egyptian Railway Authority also sent emergency crews to remove debris and return train operations to their regular timetable.
Prime Minister Mustapha Madbouly, the Health Minister, and the Minister of Social Solidarity coordinated the ambulance and patient-transfer services. A total of 72 ambulances transported the injured to Al-Wasiti Hospital in Beni Suef, Al-Wayattia Hospital, and Atfih Hospital in Giza.
Some injured passengers were also transported to Al-Ayat hospital for treatment.
President Sisi orders investigation into negligence
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi posted on Facebook, "I am following with great concern the consequences of the two-train accident," and ordered a rapid investigation and accountability for anyone found negligent.
In a social media post, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi extended his condolences to the families involved. He also directed state agencies to provide medical care, investigate the accident promptly, and hold negligent parties accountable.
Public Prosecution probes signal system and driver error
Security and technical authorities are currently investigating the incident by reviewing operating procedures, signalling systems, and control arrangements.
Conductor death confirmed among casualties
The Health Ministry also reported that a train driver was among the fatalities.
Safety concerns amid Egypt’s aging rail infrastructure
Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed has linked the crash to the $421.2 million World Bank project titled “Railway Safety Improvement in Egypt,” which began in August 2021.
Despite billions of dollars spent on new highways and high-speed rail lines over the past ten years, Egypt’s aging rail network has not yet been fully modernised. In September 2025, a train driver and his assistant sustained injuries when two freight trains collided in the same al-Ayyat district.
