Germany’s Sparkassen savings-bank network launched a cryptocurrency trading service for retail customers on October 19, 2026. The service, branded as "Krypto – powered by Deka," allows eligible customers at participating savings banks to buy, sell, and hold digital assets directly through their existing mobile banking application.
DekaBank, the securities house and investment institution for the Sparkassen group, provides the trading and custody infrastructure for the platform. The bank handles both trading and custody for the participating institutions, ensuring the service is integrated within the existing banking framework.
Supported assets and fee structure
Customers can trade five digital assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL), and Polygon (POL). This selection of assets is available to users directly within the Sparkasse app.
Trading fees are set at €0.99 per order, in addition to applicable spreads that depend on the quoted purchase or sale price provided by DekaBank. For a €50 purchase, the €0.99 fixed charge represents 1.98% of the order amount, while for a €500 transaction, about ₹45,000, the same charge is 0.198%, excluding the impact of the trading spread.
Buying and subsequently selling a €100 position costs €1.98 in fixed fees, which represents 1.98% of the initial purchase value, excluding the impact of trading spreads. These costs apply to all transactions conducted on the platform.
Service integration and user requirements
Customers access the crypto trading service directly within the existing Sparkasse mobile banking application. Users must open a dedicated cryptocurrency account with DekaBank to participate.
This process does not require customers to open a conventional securities custody account. The service is fully integrated into the banking app, allowing users to trade without leaving the platform.
Rollout strategy and institutional interest
The German Savings Banks and Giro Association permitted member institutions to offer crypto services, but each savings bank decides independently if and when to launch the feature. Availability is not immediate nationwide, as the rollout is occurring slowly across participating banks.
More than 230 institutions have expressed interest in the service. The association expects 30 to 40 additional savings banks to introduce the offering each month.
DSGV executive board member Joachim Schmalzl said each savings bank would independently determine when to introduce the offering. The association expects a substantial proportion of interested institutions to be connected during the first half of 2027.
Custody, security, and regulatory risks
DekaBank operates the service in cooperation with Boerse Stuttgart, which also provides cryptocurrency custody. DekaBank has provided institutional crypto custody since 2025 and operates within the European Union’s MiCA regulatory framework.
Customers do not receive unrestricted control over private keys, as DekaBank holds them in a centrally managed omnibus wallet. Cryptocurrency withdrawals are permitted only to wallet addresses associated with approved crypto-asset service providers. Transfers to other wallet addresses are excluded.
The DSGV emphasized that digital assets remain highly speculative and customers could lose their entire investment. Cryptocurrency holdings traded through this service are not covered by the German statutory bank deposit guarantee scheme. Customers retain full exposure to potential losses.
Market positioning and competitive strategy
The low fixed transaction fee aims to position Sparkassen against fintech rivals such as N26, Trade Republic, and Revolut. This service is restricted to adults who make independent investment decisions.
Participating savings banks will not provide cryptocurrency investment advice to these customers. Sparkassen also will not actively promote these products across its branch networks.
Individual savings banks decide when to introduce the service to their self-directed adult clients.
Evolution from past policy to MiCA compliance
The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe previously opposed retail cryptocurrency trading because of risks. Approximately four years earlier, the network's governing bodies advised against offering such trading services, according to a Bloomberg report from October 19, 2026.
The current shift follows the development of customer demand and the European Union's establishment of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). The group's move also aligns with initiatives by Germany's cooperative banking sector, including services developed through DZ Bank.
In June 2025, the German Savings Banks and Giro Association decided to permit member institutions to offer cryptocurrency services, reversing a previous stance of avoiding retail crypto trading due to volatility and investor protection concerns. Crypto.news reported in June 2025 that Sparkassen was preparing these services for retail customers through DekaBank.
Operational warnings and data transparency
DekaBank provides a binding quoted price for a limited period before a customer approves a transaction. This quote may incorporate a spread that differs from public exchange order books and exists between buying and selling rates.
Trading is generally available outside ordinary exchange hours. However, DekaBank warns that cryptocurrency prices can fluctuate significantly and that trading may be subject to delays or interruptions.
Technical problems, maintenance, and market conditions can also cause these transaction interruptions. Neither DekaBank nor the DSGV has disclosed expected cryptocurrency trading volumes, revenue projections, or initial customer adoption figures. DekaBank’s announcement did not provide figures for funded crypto accounts, trading volumes, or customer deposits.
