Legacy and controversy of the 2002 film Kaante
The 2002 film Kaante frequently drew comparisons to the 1992 thriller Reservoir Dogs, which led to accusations that Gupta copied the film. Gupta repeatedly faced these charges but denied that Kaante was a remake.
Tarantino praised the character backstories and the warehouse sequence in Kaante. In that film, Lucky Ali plays Maqbool ‘Mak’ Haider, who is revealed as an undercover LAPD officer. The warehouse climax features a Mexican standoff, where Kumar Gaurav’s character, Andy, escapes with the loot while the others are caught in gunfire.
In an interview with Cyrus Broacha, Gupta said he never watched Reservoir Dogs in its entirety. He said he found the film boring after the first 10 to 15 minutes. Gupta claimed Kaante offered a larger story because of the backgrounds developed for its characters.
Gupta's career in the crime and action genres
Gupta directed, produced and co-wrote Shootout at Lokhandwala, which focused on the 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout. He returned to the crime genre in 2013 with Shootout at Wadala, another film inspired by real-life events.
His directorial ventures also include the 2007 anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan and the 2009 film Acid Factory.
