A jet-powered Russian drone struck a crowded train station in Dnipro on Thursday, killing 14 civilians as they boarded trains. The attack hit a platform where a train was preparing to depart for Zaporizhzhia, according to the state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia. Two passenger trains were stopped at the station when the drone struck.
At least 14 people died and 14 others sustained injuries in the strike. Oleksandr Hanzha reported on Telegram that six of the injured, among them an 11‑year‑old boy, are still in critical condition. A 40-year-old man also suffered injuries that resulted in the loss of his legs.
The BBC characterized the incident as a Russian assault on the Dnipro train station. Twenty-two media outlets provided coverage of the strike. CBS News, CNN, DW, and RTE reported that the drone hit the station while civilians were boarding.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked the attack to international policy and sanctions after the death toll rose from 13 to 14. He called on the United States and Europe to take action following the attack on suburban and passenger trains.
Zelenskyy condemns Dnipro attack and links it to sanctions
Kyiv officials characterized the Russian drone strike at the train station as "horrific". President Volodymyr Zelenskyy queried on X the number of terrorist attacks Russia has executed since sanctions were removed from specific Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector. He linked the Dnipro strike to the lifting of these sanctions.
Zelenskyy told CNN, "These are deliberate strikes against civilians, brazen in their cruelty, and the Russians are carrying them out right as the humanitarian operation in Oleshky is unfolding". Moscow conducted the strikes against Ukrainian commuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said, "Elon Musk is a genius. Truly, a real genius," and added that Russia and its American partners value the relationship and continue to work closely together despite political issues.
Melania Trump credited for Oleshky humanitarian truce
A localized ceasefire in the besieged city of Oleshky has been in effect for three days. Both sides attribute the agreement to U.S. first lady Melania Trump. She has received praise for her role in the relief truce.
The planned six-day ceasefire has created an unusual calm for civilians in nearby Ukrainian-held Kherson. Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said the parties are fully adhering to the agreement with no reported violations.
Lantratova said both sides are respecting their commitments by permitting military personnel to clear landmines and prepare a safe corridor for the humanitarian convoy. Lantratova and her team are traveling to Oleshky for the aid delivery, an operation she said had been five months in the making. The current situation was described as "much more than a localized ceasefire — such as the one recently negotiated for Oleshky".
Humanitarian aid prepares to enter Oleshky
A ceasefire is currently holding in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, where civilians are preparing for evacuation. Humanitarian assistance was ready to enter the city as the limited ceasefire entered its third day and military units removed landmines.
Coffee kiosk owner Nataliia Myronenko, 42, said she has a steady stream of customers during the quiet. She described the pause as "a breath of freedom" and noted that it will end soon.
Interfax, a Russian news agency, reported that the Kremlin anticipated the delivery of aid to Oleshky on Thursday or Friday.
Additional Russian strikes reported in Kremenchuk and Chernihiv
Russian drone strikes hit the cities of Kremenchuk and Chernihiv, leaving 5 people dead and 56 injured. A drone strike on an apartment building in Kremenchuk killed 3 people.
Two 15-year-old girls died in a separate strike on Chernihiv. Among the 56 people injured across the attacks, 10 are children.
Massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow intercepted
Ukraine launched an overnight drone attack against the Russian capital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian air defenses intercepted 613 drones, with 231 of those destroyed on their approach to the city.
Sobyanin noted that about half of the total downed drones targeted Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry asserted that it shot down and eliminated 1,214 drones in multiple regions overnight. Debris from the downed drones caused minor damage at an industrial facility in Sterlitamak.
UK announces £10 billion in new support for Ukraine
John Healey announced a new £10 billion support package for Ukraine. Of this total, £500 million is designated specifically for winter air defenses.
Starlink service issues noted during previous strike
Photographic evidence indicates that Ukraine's Starlink service was throttled during a previous Russian strike. That attack killed 5 people in a park.
