Actor Ranbir Kapoor claimed India possessed flying vehicles 5,000 years ago while comparing the mythical Pushpaka Vimana to Elon Musk’s recent flying car invention during promotional interviews for his upcoming film, Ramayana. Kapoor plays the role of Lord Rama in the production.
Kapoor made these remarks during a Star Talks interview and a separate conversation with television presenter Suma Kanakala.
These comments emerged during the promotional cycle for the film.
Online backlash follows viral comments
The remark by Kapoor regarding Elon Musk and the Pushpaka Vimana went viral on social media. Netizens labeled the comments as "WhatsApp gyaan" and "uncle talk".
Online critics questioned why people used wooden chariots pulled by animals if flying cars existed 5,000 years ago.
Visual effects and design of the Pushpaka Vimana
The production team used the Academy Award-winning studio DNEG to create the visual effects for the film. The trailer for Ramayana displays the Pushpaka Vimana as a large flying structure among its primary visuals.
Director Nitesh Tiwari noted that the team spent nearly two years finalizing the design for the vehicle. The design required multiple iterations to accommodate the choreography of the fight between the characters Ravana and Jatayu.
During a Star Talks interview, the host praised the weapons of the era and the visual effects work produced by DNEG.
Tesla Roadster status versus mythical vehicle
Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Roadster 2 in mid-October 2026, claiming the vehicle is the world's first flying car using SpaceX technology.
Tesla demonstrated the vehicle performing stunts at a Texas facility on October 15, including driving upside down on a curved ramp and briefly becoming airborne. After the demonstration, Musk said, "Well, it worked".
The Roadster is not currently available for purchase, and Tesla does not expect production to start until 2028.
The Pushpaka Vimana is described as a vehicle that can carry passengers through the skies and was created by the celestial architect Vishwakarma for Lord Brahma.
The vehicle was later gifted to Kubera and eventually taken by Ravana.
Ramayana film production and cast details
The film Ramayana is a two-part epic directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It is scheduled for a worldwide release on November 5, 2026, to coincide with the Diwali festival.
Ranbir Kapoor portrays Lord Rama, while Sai Pallavi plays Sita. Yash portrays Ravana, Sunny Deol plays Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey portrays Lakshman.
Namit Malhotra and Yash produced the film. Rahman and Hans Zimmer composed the music for the production.
Director Nitesh Tiwari, Kapoor, Yash, Dubey and Rakul Preet Singh discussed the film at a recent event.
Ranbir Kapoor addresses ongoing scrutiny
Scrutiny of Kapoor intensified following the release of each promotional asset by the filmmakers.
Kapoor apologized after mistakenly saying "achchai ka ant" instead of "jeet" during a Dussehra event.
Kapoor referenced the Kishore Kumar song "Kuch Toh Log Kahenge" from the film Amar Prem to address the commentary. He said the philosophy to follow is to focus on work, intention, and kindness rather than public opinion.
Initial social media post from October 31
A social media post by Filmy_Duniya shared the comments on October 31, 2026. The post quoted Kapoor saying, "Elon Musk recently invented a flying car, i think India did it 5000 two days back, india did 5000 back #Ramayana,".
