Police arrested three suspects in Kota, Rajasthan, on Monday for the shooting at 36-year-old actor Tiger Shroff's car in Mumbai's Juhu area. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the son of veteran actor Jackie Shroff was leaving a football match.
Two of the three assailants fired five to six rounds at the vehicle. Tiger Shroff escaped the attack relatively unhurt, but his driver and a bystander sustained injuries.
The three arrested individuals are identified as Hrithik alias Roshan from Begusarai, Bihar, Rehan from Sonipat, Haryana, and Phool Singh from Haryana. Authorities took the suspects into custody on a train in Kota on Monday.
This investigation follows a violent attack on a public figure in a high-profile Mumbai neighborhood. The arrest of the suspects on a train marks a development in the case regarding the shooting that left two people injured.
Mother of suspect Rehan claims son was lured and trapped
Rehan's mother, Shamshida, claims her son was manipulated into the crime with the promise of a job paying ₹2 lakh. Shamshida, who resides in Sonipat, Haryana, reported that she had no contact with her son for 20 days before his arrest.
Shamshida told reporters on Tuesday that an individual arrived at their home in a vehicle a few days before his disappearance and took Rehan away. She suspects that her son was given an intoxicant before being taken to commit the crime.
According to Shamshida, Rehan's mobile phone was confiscated and subsequently switched off. She stated that her son was trapped and exploited by people who target young individuals under pressure.
Addressing her son directly, Shamshida said, "I will say, son, what you have done is not right and (you) should never ever come under anyone’s influence".
Suspect Rehan was a school dropout with prior Arms Act case
Rehan, a class 9 dropout, has been living with his mother in Devdu village for nearly 10 years. His father, Raisuddin, a daily wager, stated that he does not live with his son.
Rehan was previously arrested under the Arms Act and was out on bail. Raisuddin attributed this prior legal case to his son's "friend circle" and noted that Rehan's mother, a factory worker, arranged his bail.
To support his family, Rehan had been learning welding in Gurugram. His mother claimed that a youth from Bihar had recruited him for this work, promising that his brother would teach him and provide good pay. Rehan had previously dropped out of school due to poverty.
Police investigate Lawrence Bishnoi gang link to firing incident
The Anti-Extortion Cell is investigating the firing incident and has charged the three accused with attempt to murder. Investigators believe the conspiracy was coordinated by Anil Pandit, an associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
After the shooting, the attackers informed their handlers, which led to the release of a pre-prepared Facebook post and an audio clip where Anil Pandit and Harman Sandhu claimed responsibility on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Police suspect the shooters sent a video of Tiger Shroff playing football to their handlers before the attack to receive a green signal to proceed.
Anil Pandit allegedly offered Rehan ₹35,000 in advance and promised to help him go abroad. Rehan then offered his associate Hrithik ₹35,000 and the prospect of a job overseas in return for participating in the attack.
Investigators claim that Rehan and Phool Singh had previously opened fire at a businessman in Amritsar about two months ago, which is how Rehan reportedly came into contact with Anil Pandit. Police recovered a bag containing clothes for each of the three men and two mobile phones, as the third suspect had discarded his phone while traveling.
Accused were promised money to execute attack on actor
The three suspects were allegedly paid a collective advance of ₹50,000 to carry out the attack, NDTV reported. They were also promised additional money upon the successful execution of the shooting.
