Rubio to hold bilateral talks at Taj Mahal Palace

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai. These high-level discussions are scheduled to take place at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Before the meeting, Rubio will pay tribute to victims of terrorism at the Taj Memorial. The wreath-laying ceremony is set for 3:40 pm on Tuesday.

The bilateral talks will follow this scheduled tribute event.

US and India work to finalize bilateral trade deal

New Delhi and Washington are working to finalize a bilateral trade agreement despite differences over tariffs and Indian purchases of Russian crude oil. Marco Rubio stated that the United States and India are very close to finalizing this trade deal.

On Monday, while in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio told reporters the US is very close to completing the agreement. US President Donald Trump recently waived potential tariffs linked to India's Russian crude purchases to ease tensions.

Rubio said the US must consider India's energy requirements when assessing sanctions and tariffs related to Russian oil. He described India as an important ally and partner.

Washington requires time to assess the economic implications of measures regarding Russian oil, including impacts on global energy supplies and prices. Discussions in Washington are currently considering a temporary waiver on certain US sanctions concerning India's energy purchases from Russia.

Jaishankar meets US Congressional delegation in Mumbai

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with a US Congressional delegation in Mumbai on October 20, 2026. The delegation included Representatives Jason Smith, David Schweikert, Elise Stefanik, Andy Ogles, and Brad Friedman.

Jaishankar said on X that he was pleased to meet the group and appreciated their positive sentiments and interest in taking forward India-US ties. He added that the meeting covered trade, energy, security, and technology aspects of the relationship.

The discussions also addressed the ease of doing business in India and the deepening of Indo-Pacific cooperation.

Rubio scheduled to visit Jamnagar refinery and attend Freedom 250 Reception

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to attend the Freedom 250 Reception at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on Tuesday evening. This event marks the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will attend the celebration as the guest of honour.

Rubio will also visit the Taj memorial to pay tribute to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks. His itinerary includes bilateral talks with Jaishankar regarding trade, energy security, defence, and critical and emerging technologies.

On Wednesday, Rubio is scheduled to travel to Jamnagar in Gujarat. He will visit the Reliance Industries refinery during this trip.

Rubio expected to meet prominent Indian business leaders

Rubio is expected to meet with prominent Indian business leaders during his stay. The list of corporate figures includes Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and N Chandrasekaran, according to The Week.

Strategic partnership builds on May 2026 Quad summit

The visit provides an opportunity to advance cooperation across the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The Ministry of External Affairs stated the visit provides an opportunity to review India-US relations and discuss ways to strengthen the comprehensive global strategic partnership. Discussions are expected to cover trade, energy security, defence, and strategic cooperation.

Regional developments, including the conflict in Ukraine and the crisis in West Asia, are also on the agenda. Rubio previously visited India in May 2026 to attend the Quad foreign ministers' meeting and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar. This visit occurs less than five months after he attended the Quad summit.

Rubio visited the Gateway of India in Mumbai with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated it has been the practice for the last decade to host foreign dignitaries outside Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Prime Minister of Spain in Baroda and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad.

Jaishankar previously hosted the SCO Foreign Minister's meeting in Goa, the Foreign Minister of Botswana in Kewadia, and the Heart of Asia conference in Amritsar. Jaishankar hosted the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in Mumbai on October 19. That meeting reviewed bilateral cooperation in energy, trade, investment, spin-tech, defence, and connectivity, as well as global developments.
