Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi has defended the removal of nearly 1 crore voter names in the state. He stated the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists was handled properly by the Election Commission to remove duplicate, deceased, or relocated voters.
Jarkiholi attributed the execution of the process to training provided to party cadres. This position contradicts the official stance held by the Congress party.
Rahul Gandhi flags concerns over vote theft
Rahul Gandhi previously expressed opposition to the voter deletions occurring in Karnataka. He flagged concerns regarding "vote theft" during the Special Intensive Revision process, noting Karnataka as the first state he highlighted.
Gandhi also accused the government of "criminally destroying" the Tata Group, which is the largest Indian conglomerate. As of October 2024, Noel Tata chairs Tata Trusts, which possesses a 66% stake in Tata Sons. Gandhi claimed business leaders were "lacking courage" and stated that the Congress party "will ensure justice for these crimes".
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused Gandhi of "spreading distrust" and attempting to "incite" business leaders. She criticized Gandhi for "casually labelling commercial and legal matters as criminal" and urged him to refrain from "politicising every issue".
Sitharaman stated that the Congress party had "smothered the spirit of the Indian entrepreneurs" under the "Licence-Quota Raj," a system of government economic controls that existed until 1991. She also accused Gandhi and his party of having a history of demeaning the judiciary and urged him to "refrain from seeing ghosts everywhere".
Gandhi replied that Indian enterprises, excluding three or four "cronies," currently loathe the Union government and do not require incitement.
BJP highlights internal Congress division
The Bharatiya Janata Party has used social media to mock Rahul Gandhi over the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. The BJP utilized the platform X to highlight comments made by Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi, arguing that Congress leaders are contradicting Rahul Gandhi’s anti-SIR stance.
Jarkiholi’s public defense of the SIR deletions has drawn attention to a potential division within the Congress party regarding the campaign against the Election Commission. Furthermore, a corporate disagreement at Tata Sons pertains to the proposed stock market listing of the holding company and the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman.
State Congress leaders challenge Jarkiholi
State Congress chief BK Hariprasad claimed the SIR exercise was intended to uproot the democratic process. He alleged that nearly 1 crore votes were deleted in Karnataka to help the BJP establish a base in the state.
Priyank Kharge challenged Jarkiholi’s assessment by citing an incident in Chittapur. He said 40 voters from a single community were targeted for deletion using pre-printed Form 7s of unknown origin.
Congress plans rally and impeachment program
The Congress party is planning a large rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Grounds this Sunday to demonstrate the strength of the INDIA bloc.
A 4.5-hour People’s Impeachment program against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is also scheduled. This event will take place at the Delhi home of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and will be broadcast on social media.
