- The CBI has requested the Supreme Court to move the Twisha Sharma trial to Delhi.
- The agency alleges former judge Giribala Singh may influence the trial in Bhopal.
- A chargesheet was filed against Giribala and Samarth Singh on August 17, 2026.
- The victim's father, Navnidhi Sharma, filed the initial transfer petition.
- The Supreme Court has stayed the trial proceedings pending further hearings.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially requested the Supreme Court to move the trial of the Twisha Sharma death case from Bhopal to Delhi. The agency informed the Supreme Court on October 30, 2026, that the trial should be relocated because the accused may intimidate witnesses and influence the proceedings.
The CBI argued that the accused is influential and could shift the trial if it remains in Madhya Pradesh. The agency stated that former judge Giribala Singh is likely to influence the proceedings if they continue in the state. This move is intended to prevent the accused from exerting influence over the judicial process.
Allegations of evidence tampering and intimidation
The CBI alleged that Giribala Singh, who is the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, has attempted to tamper with evidence in the case. The agency stated that witnesses may be intimidated if the trial is not transferred out of Bhopal.
According to the CBI, Giribala Singh misused her position to interfere with the initial investigation by the Madhya Pradesh Police. This interference included attempting to manage the crime scene and tamper with evidence.
The CBI also claimed that on May 13, 2026, Giribala Singh contacted the owner of Xpression Beauty Parlour. She inquired about Twisha Sharma’s visit to the parlour on May 12 and arranged for the collection of CCTV footage.
Chargesheet filed against Giribala and Samarth Singh
The CBI filed a chargesheet against retired District and Sessions Judge Giribala Singh and her son, Samarth Singh, on August 17, 2026. Bhopal-based Samarth Singh works as a practising advocate.
Included in the chargesheet are section 85 for cruelty, section 108 for abetment to suicide, and section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Although dowry-related sections were dropped from the chargesheet, the CBI stated that it is continuing its investigation into those allegations.
Navnidhi Sharma initiates transfer petition
The victim's father, Navnidhi Sharma, initiated the transfer petition to move the trial from the Tenth District and Sessions Judge in Bhopal to a competent court in Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officially supported this transfer request in the Supreme Court.
Senior Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal and Advocate on Record Abhijeet Sinha appeared in the Supreme Court on behalf of the petitioner, Navnidhi Sharma.
Bail history and professional background of accused
On July 25, 2026, the First Additional District Judge in Bhopal rejected a subsequent bail application submitted by Giribala Singh.
Supreme Court stays Bhopal trial proceedings
The Supreme Court has previously stayed the trial proceedings in the Bhopal court and sought responses from the CBI and the accused regarding the transfer plea.
Today, the hearing for the transfer plea before the bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant was adjourned to a later date.
