Controversy surrounding Ranbir Kapoor's casting
Shiv Sagar, grandson of Ramanand Sagar, said he cannot accept Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama because of the actor's performance in the 2023 film Animal. Sagar suggested the casting choice was likely made to provide a marketing push for the film.
Yeah, I am a big beef fan".
Actor Nikita Rawal publicly criticized the casting decision, calling Kapoor a "disgusting and characterless person" due to his past statements.
Industry veterans critique the film's portrayal
Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna criticized the film's trailer on 6 November 2026 due to its heavy use of visual effects and action sequences. He argued that Lord Rama should be portrayed with dignity and restraint rather than as a conventional action hero.
Khanna questioned the action-heavy portrayal of Lord Rama in the footage. He said: "If you portray Shri Ram more as a man of action than as Maryada Purushottam, and turn him into Clint Eastwood, I might feel that Lord Ram did not fight like this".
Gajendra Chauhan, who played Yudhishthir in the BR Chopra Mahabharat, expressed reservations about the trailer on 6 November 2026. He specifically criticized the presentation of Kaikeyi and the scene where she asks for the exile of Ram.
He noted his own identity was created by the Mahabharat series because he lacked a strong public image beforehand.
Chauhan acknowledged that Ranbir Kapoor looks convincing in the costume. He urged viewers to wait for the full film to be released before reaching a final conclusion.
Mixed reactions from former mythological actors
Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in the 1987-1988 Ramayan, told DNA that he believes Ranbir Kapoor will justify the role. However, he felt the patience, calm, and innocence associated with Arun Govil's performance were missing in the new teaser.
