Nearly 50 people died of thirst in Niger's Sahara desert after a truck broke down, leaving its passengers stranded without water.
Two survivors managed to walk 50 kilometers through the desert to a water source and then to the town of Assamaka, where they alerted authorities.
Officials said the group had been returning from a Muslim festival in Mali when the vehicle broke down more than 80km west of Assamaka.
The survivors trekked across the desert to Assamaka, where they raised the alarm.
Struggle to Survive
The group had been travelling from neighbouring Mali after attending a religious festival when the vehicle reportedly broke down.
"Deprived of water and unable to repair the vehicle despite the efforts of the driver, his assistants and the passengers, the travelers found themselves trapped in the heart of a hostile environment where extreme temperatures and lack of supply points make survival extremely difficult," the Agadez governorate said.
The governorate added that the victims were buried in mass graves at the scene in what officials called a "particularly delicate and emotionally exhausting task" for the survivors.
Desert Dangers
The incident highlights the dangers of migration routes through the region.
Sources confirmed that the Sahara desert is a notorious route for migrants, with many attempting to cross the desert in search of better opportunities.
However, the harsh conditions and lack of resources make it a perilous journey, with many losing their lives in the process.
Experts said that the incident is a stark reminder of the need for more effective measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
Investigation Underway
Government sources said that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the truck's breakdown and to identify those responsible.
Witnesses said that the truck had been travelling at high speed before it broke down, and that the passengers had been left stranded without food or water.
Meanwhile, officials are working to provide assistance to the survivors and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater action to protect migrants and prevent such tragedies.
Human Cost
The incident is a devastating reminder of the human cost of migration and the dangers faced by those attempting to cross the desert.
The survivors, who walked 50 kilometers to alert authorities, are being treated for dehydration and exhaustion.
Officials said that the survivors are receiving medical attention and counseling to help them cope with the trauma they experienced.
The incident has also sparked a wider debate about the need for more effective measures to prevent such tragedies and to protect the rights of migrants.
