Jamia Millia Islamia has lodged a formal complaint with the Delhi Police against Congress Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood and Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi for allegedly trespassing on campus and inciting unrest. The Delhi Police subsequently filed an FIR against both MPs regarding these allegations.
This legal action follows an ongoing student agitation.
University shifts to online classes amid security lockdown
Jamia Millia Islamia transitioned to online classes on Saturday, citing security concerns related to the ongoing campus protests. The administration has directed students to avoid visiting the campus, announcing that all gates and libraries will remain closed until further notice.
Security personnel are deployed in large numbers outside the university, with restricted access at Gate No 7 and nearby entry points. Approximately 200 students currently remain inside the campus premises.
Protesters continue 13-day hunger strike for union restoration
A section of students has continued a protest for nearly two weeks, demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union. Elections for this body have not been held since 2006.
Four students have been on a hunger strike for 13 days to press these demands. PhD scholar Sanam is currently staging a sit-in protest at the university's Gulistan-e-Ghalib lawns.
University staff and administration clash with protesters
More than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff, led by Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, marched to Gate 7. They aimed to persuade the protesting students to call off their ongoing agitation.
The staff members made repeated appeals to the students for nearly two hours. However, the protesters refused to vacate the site despite these efforts.
The university administration alleged that some students pushed security guards and teachers during the interaction. Officials maintained that Gate 18 is the only designated site for campus protests. They stated that the current occupation of the Gulistan-e-Ghalib lawns is unauthorized.
SFI alleges police crackdown and use of force
The Students' Federation of India alleged that hundreds of police personnel detained students outside Gate 7. In a social media post, the SFI described the ongoing situation as a crackdown on students.
The SFI Jamia unit alleged that the proctor, registrar, and security adviser attempted to remove the hunger strikers. They reported that officials dismantled tents and dragged women students during the process.
A student reported a heavy deployment of police outside the campus, with students being stopped and detained. Police personnel repeatedly used loudspeakers to announce that students should vacate the campus and nearby footpaths.
Students alleged they were not allowed to carry food or water inside the campus. There was no response from the Delhi Police to the complaint or the allegations regarding detentions outside Gate 7.
Negotiations and student demands for union elections
A seven-member committee of professors has held four rounds of talks with the students. The university notified a JMISU Constitution Draft Committee on 21 October.
It also promised to review disciplinary action taken or initiated against students over the 12 October protest. The SFI demanded that students be included in the constitution-drafting committee.
They also requested that election dates be announced in the current semester and all disciplinary action be revoked. The SFI further sought the resignation of the chief proctor and security adviser over the alleged use of force.
